As we all know, letters from the IRS are seldom welcome, for oftentimes, we fear the worst–even if we didn’t do anything wrong. “Did I make a mistake?” “Did I forget to file something?” These are all valid questions that come to mind upon seeing an envelope from the Internal Revenue Service in our mailbox. That being said, our New Jersey CPAs have outlined what you should do upon receiving such a letter in the mail to ensure that everything is in order. They are as follows:
- The first thing you should understand is that you should not panic. Oftentimes, these letters only require you to give them a read and follow the instructions. These letters are seldom the end of the world. That being said, you mustn’t ignore these letters. Time is of the essence. Read the letter as soon as you get it, as it is most likely about your tax returns or tax accounts. In most cases, you won’t even have to reply to these notices, as they are generally just that–notices. However, if you owe money or are instructed to reply with a payment or otherwise, you must do so promptly. Our New Jersey CPAs can help ensure you do so correctly.
- If you receive a disputed notice from the IRS, meaning that you believe the IRS sent you information that was incorrect in some way, you should instantly mail a letter back to the IRS detailing why you dispute the notice. You should provide additional documentation that supports your claim that the IRS is wrong. You should hear back from the IRS within 30 days.
- Keep in mind that the IRS will never contact you via social media or text message, and they will also never call you on the phone for a first-time contact. Generally, the IRS will only communicate via snail mail. Be aware of scams, as they are rampant. If you do receive any notification from the IRS that confuses you, ensure that you contact the IRS directly. Do not return any strange phone calls or respond to any strange emails, text messages, or voicemails.
If you have any additional questions about the IRS, tax refunds, or any other tax-related questions, please do not hesitate to speak with our New Jersey CPAs today. We are here to help you in any way we can.
